Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Ample research shows that this observation applies to individual as well as team efforts. High performers develop habits — repeatable, consistent behaviors — that produce excellent results.

High performance begins with a set of well-defined goals. But raising the bar with well defined goals is just a start, since by themselves goals are often little more than lofty-sounding words. It also requires identifying the gap between words and action — what we call the “saying-doing gap” — and then generating the positive tension necessary to develop habits that produce excellent results.

It is hard to adopt new, high performance behaviors … even under the best of circumstances. To make it easier, focus on breaking down the process into small steps. I like to say, “When you take care of the little things, the big things take care of themselves.” The greater your ability to focus on what matters most, when it most matters, determines the level of greatness in any and all areas of achievement.
What do high performers do that others don’t? They focus on developing habits — repeatable, consistent behaviors — that produce excellent results!
