Spencer Silver was working with 3M in the 70’s to develop strong adhesives. One experiment produced a weak adhesive, that seemed to be good for nothing. As with many experiments, when no one could find a use for the weak adhesive, the temptation was to discard it. However, Spencer refused to get rid of it. Another 3M scientist by the name of Arthur Fry had grown weary of markers falling out of his hymnals and decided to use Spencer’s “weak” adhesive. Because Spencer said, “Yes” … today we have Post-It Notes.
