Servant Leadership is first and foremost a way of THINKING.
It is a perspective rooted in a person deciding how she wants to live, who she wants to be, and what she wants out of life. It is an ascent of mind and heart to live with a transcendent cause. Most people do not live with a sense of transcendence. They live for today with little thought to their future. They are hoping that something good is going to happen, but they have no concept that they can help that good thing happen.
Servant Leadership becomes a way of BEING.
A person becomes a Servant Leader in loving, in expressing faithfulness, in giving, in extending acts of mercy and kindness, in developing self-control. Servant Leadership is at the core of abiding peace and joy.
Servant Leadership is a way of DOING.
It becomes both the what and the how of a person’s behavior, not only at home or with friends but also on the job, in the community, riding the subway or driving the freeway, interacting with strangers, being a consumer or customer or patient or client-even walking the concourse of an airport. It is central to all aspects of leadership.
Servant Leadership is, in one word, GENEROSITY!
