The definition of perspective is: “A mental view or outlook; a way of regarding situations or topics; the ability to perceive things in their actual interrelations or comparative importance.”

How does perspective relate to your leadership effectiveness?

How you VIEW life determines how you DO life.
“If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail.” – Abraham Maslow

Your OUTLOOK determines your OUTCOME.
“If the primary aim of the captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever.” – Thomas Aquinas

Your ATTITUDE determines your ALTITUDE.
“If you do not raise your eyes you will think that you are the highest point.” – Antonio Porchia

Perspective is the mental/psychological lid that will determine the level of success or failure you will have as a leader.

When David faced Goliath, he never called him a giant. Everybody else did. They talked about his size, his strength, and his skill. But David called Goliath an uncircumcised Philistine. He never even gave him credit for being big. David did not deny it, but he did not dwell on it and that was the key. David had the attitude, if he was going to magnify anything, it would be his source of his strength – God’s greatness.

His brothers and the other Israelites were afraid and intimidated. When David told them he wanted to fight Goliath they said, “You can’t fight him–you’re just a kid, you’re too small, you don’t have a chance.” But David had a different perspective. He knew if God be for him, who would be against him? He knew if God be on his side, whom shall he fear? The bottom line – David knew he was strong in the Lord and that he had all the forces of Heaven backing him up. He went out, stood before Goliath and said, “You come against me with a sword and a shield, but I come against you in the name of the Lord of Israel!” David was magnifying his God, talking about God’s goodness. This boy, who was half the giant’s size and had no chance in the natural, defeated this huge giant. How did he do it? He had the right perspective!

You may be like David, facing a giant right now. It may be a giant related to your finances, your health, relationships, employment, or something else. It’s so big, it looks impossible in the natural. You may think, “I don’t have a chance.” My encouragement is to do as David did – be strong in the Lord and know that you have all of the forces of Heaven backing you up … know that God is for you and that God always works all things together for your good. You were created in the image and the likeness of the ultimate leader, the greatest force in the universe! There is no enemy too big, no challenge too tough for you, no sickness too great, and no dream too far off. It is all about your perspective.

What is one area in your life where you could benefit from a change in perspective? Pray about it. Ask for God to inject His Super into your natural giving you the new perspective to destroy that giant in your life!
