This thought process was born out of a funny thing that happened the other day.

After being gone all day, Sheila and I returned home. The dogs had been out all day, so I went to the back door and let them in. They were happy to see us, but got really “dog happy” when I said, “You want to go outside and do your business?”

I find it amazingly funny that my dogs had been out all day, waiting for me to get home to take them… back outside… to do their business!!! I then put the leash on London, went to another door in our house and went outside to walk the dogs. We got to the first path of grass and it was like they had been waiting all day long to do their business. They both squatted, not once, but before the walk was over, 4 times! I said out loud, “You dogs are unbelievable!”

That’s when I begin to get the download of The Law of the Leash.

  1. A leash teaches us to walk close to the Master.

The positives of the leash is it teaches us to to walk with the Master, go where He wants us to go with a gentle nudge, stop when He pulls the leash, and be pulled in the direction we need to go/grow.

The negatives of the leash is that we need a leash to do not our business but His business. God has given us a “space” much like He did Adam and Eve. But when they didn’t learn the “grace” in their “space,” they were leashed, by their own choice. Romans 5:19 says,

“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.”

  1. A leash teaches us boundaries.

My dogs have our whole back yard, which is very spacious. When I put them on a leash, they are limited by the distance of the leash. I really believe God does not want us to be on a leash that He imposes, because we don’t “take care of our/His business” in the “space” He has given us. He wants us to learn the lessons of “grace” the power of God to do things God’s way.

  1. A leash is meant to be temporary.

If we learn the lessons of our “space” and begin to operate by “grace” we will not have to be led with a leash. Sin should not be our greatest teacher of what not to do again! God wants us to learn His “grace” because of His goodness. If we will choose to walk close to Him, we will not require a leash.

  1. A leash is needed for a new Place if we didn’t learn the lessons in the “first” place.

My dogs have a place, but are always looking to “do their business” in another place. The analogy by now is simple: if you don’t learn the lessons of the place you are in, and therefore, what your place is, you will require some type of leash for the next place. Always remember, your lessons are your lessons.

  1. Self-leashness is the cure for selfishness.

Self-leashness is another word for self-leadership. The first thing you will have to lead yourself out of, is selfishness. I believe that the root of every sin is selfishness. If we will self-leash ourselves, we will not require a leash from anyone.

The best news of all… God wants to totally UNLEASH you!
