There are 3 things that God has called each of us to do: 1) grow up in all things; 2) help other people grow up in all things; 3) cause growth in the Kingdom of God. This week I am focusing on the second call – help other people GROW Up in all things.

Help other people grow up. This very statement may cause you to ask, “How can I help someone else grow up? If you are a parent, you may be thinking, “I cannot even get my kids to listen to me.”

One of the most frustrating things to me is when I know I can help someone if they’d just listen. This is why Paul writes in Ephesians 4:1, “Therefore, I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.Helping someone else GROW Up starts with growing UP ourselves and living a life worthy of our calling.

Paul continues, in Ephesians 4:2,3 saying, “Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.”

In this passage, Paul gives us the answer. We help other people grow up in all things by being humble and gentle … by being patient and forgiving … by making every effort be united in the Spirit and binding together with peace. I want to focus on the very first thing in that passage, being humble. I believe if we can get to a place of humility, a change will happen and things will get better for us.

Start with humility!

Humility is frequently misunderstood as passivity and antithetical to success. However, Romans 12:2,3 says, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: do not think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

In this passage, Paul talks about changing the way we think … and then shifts to how we think about ourselves.

Humility is an awareness and attitude that all we are and all we have is from God. When you learn to be humble, you refuse to value yourself above others or to assign more importance to yourself than to others. Start with humility to begin living a life worthy of our calling and helping others to GROW Up in all things.

Tomorrow I address the importance of “Making it About Others.”
