I heard a woman say not long ago; “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.”
“My mother sure believed that.” I said, trying to establish a point of agreement.
She glared at me. “It isn’t just your mother. It’s what the Bible says.”
Well…not really.
There are lots of folklore sentiments that are good, but they aren’t in the Bible. The Bible doesn’t say that we should eat an apple a day to keep the doctor away. It doesn’t say that early birds get worms. It doesn’t even say “early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”
I’m not declaring that these are bad truisms. I’m just saying that they aren’t biblical. And when it comes to determining what is BEST in life, my personal choice is to begin with God’s Word and go from there.
Think about a map. Maps are a lot like life. There’s many places we can go, but how do we get there? In the days when I was a kid, we used a compass. I remember going on road trips and having to take a map to wherever we were going and trying to be acutely aware of where we were on the road. Because if you didn’t pay attention to mile markers, you could end up going the wrong way or even lost.
Now we have GPS. However, this isn’t always the most accurate either. Have you ever been using your GPS on your phone or other device and it’s out of sync? It says you’re going one way when you’re actually going the other way? Mine will usually tell me it needs to re calibrate.
Sometimes we all need that in life. We need to take a step back and recalibrate, are we in sync with God’s plan? On a compass, once you know which way is north you can find your way on a map. But if your compass is broken, you could be lost forever.
God’s word is what calibrates us, it’s the true compass that keeps us on the road map to success.
Think today about some areas in your life that could use an infusion of God’s plan, His definition of north.
