Agility is defined as the ability to move quickly and easily. It is different than flexibility. Flexibility is your potential to be agile. If you are flexible, then you can be agile. If you are not flexible, it will be very difficult for you to be agile. This, however, does not just relate to your physical body, but to your leadership competency.

Your ability as a leader is determined by your agility.

This means that what you are competent in will not just be determined by your gifting. What you are competent in will be determined by your capacity to determine when your strengths are helpful, and when your strengths are not helpful. I am a strong person, I have the ability to know what I want in 99% of situations that I will encounter. However, with the strength that I have to know what I want, comes the weakness of dealing with my tendency to be controlling.

I have to be agile enough in my strength to know when my strength is and is not helping other people.

It doesn’t matter how great of a leader that I think that I am. What matters equally as much, if not more, is if another person can see me as worthy of being followed. I have to develop the flexibility and agility to know how my strength is supposed to help another person, not control them.

So, think today about becoming both flexible and agile. Your leadership ability will ultimately be determined by your agility.

How can you be more agile today?
