“There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen.” -Hebrews 5:11
Babies are immature both physically and mentally, but we expect them to grow and develop. One sign of that development is moving from milk to solid food. Babies who are unable to transition from milk to solid foods are not able to consume sufficient amounts of nutrients to support adequate growth and development. This can cause a failure to thrive and lead to testing, therapy, and/or behavioral therapy to address it. Some babies may even need a feeding tube to ensure they receive essential nutrients.
Spiritual growth is similar. God doesn’t want us to fail to thrive. But so often, we don’t make the transition toward maturity, moving from milk to solid food. Rather, we find ourselves taking “another lap,” and experiencing the related consequences. Hopefully, along the way we become aware of our deficiencies and take action to supplement them so that we may begin to thrive. If we do not, we become DULL in life – spiritually, financially, and relationally. This dullness stems from a lack of desire to grow through what we go through and inhibits our ability to help others.
“You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.” –Hebrews 5:12-14
We have a responsibility to grow spiritually – to be Christ-like and to show others the way to live like Christ. This begins with having a desire to learn and grow – to be sharp. The more we know and then apply what we know, the more mature we become. The more mature we become, the more we can help others.
Be sharp. Desire to grow, apply what you know, and sow into the lives of others!
