Abound in Good things … by taking the risk to Be the BEST you, ONLY you can be.

“To Risk” by William Arthur Ward

To laugh is to risk appearing a fool,

To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.

To reach out to another is to risk involvement,

To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.

To place your ideas and dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss.

To love is to risk not being loved in return,

To live is to risk dying,

To hope is to risk despair,

To try is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.

The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing.

He may avoid suffering and sorrow,

But he cannot learn, feel, change, grow or live.

Chained by his servitude he is a slave who has forfeited all freedom.

Only a person who risks is free.

The Biblical character, Daniel, was among the Israelites taken captive from Jerusalem when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon besieged it. Daniel was selected to be part of the king’s court because he met certain criteria – the men chosen were to be ones “in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, possessing knowledge and quick to understand, who had ability to serve in the king’s palace.” (Daniel 1:4)

Daniel’s new life in captivity included instruction in both the language and literature of the Babylonians. He was exposed daily to the riches, the luxury, and all the other seductions of the Babylonian Empire. Yet he was determined to not defile himself by partaking in the delicacies or wine provided to him by the king. It was a risk to refuse the provisions and meant sure consequences for him and those overseeing his instruction. Yet Daniel remained steadfast, knowing that God would honor his choice to be his best for Him. He negotiated a ten-day test whereby he and his friends would only eat vegetables and drink water and the others would eat of the king’s delicacies. At the end of the ten days, their features appeared better and fatter in the flesh than all the young men who ate of the king’s delicacies.

Because of Daniel’s obedient and submissive heart, God gave him and his friends knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel understanding in visions and dreams. And when the king interviewed them, he found Daniel and his friends to be ten times better than the others in all matters of wisdom and understanding!
