“The decisions you make today are the determinant factors for your circumstances tomorrow.” – Leadershipology.com
There are certain things in life that determine other things … they are called determinant factors. Your decisions are one of the most powerful determinant factors for your future. We create our future circumstances by the decisions we make every day. Every decision is a seed planted for your future. Good decisions…good fruit. Bad decisions…bad fruit. You can determine a better future, by making better decisions today.
The same is true when leading a team.
As a leader, it doesn’t matter how decisive you are, if your team isn’t with you.
You must first decide to be a leader that buys into the importance of getting team buy-in. The power of decisions is multiplied by the number of people who buy-in. Foot-dragging, second-guessing, and sabotage weaken decisions. Success depends on decisions that drive useful behaviors.
If you want your team engaged after the decision, engage them in the decision-making process.
Engaging others isn’t consensus decision-making. Make people feel heard and they’re more likely to embrace your decision, even if they disagree. They simply want their say, even if they do not get their way. So, engage team members in gathering information, sharing points of view, and making suggestions. Begin by asking things like:
- What matters?
- What options are available?
- What could go wrong?
- Who might have experience in this area?
- How do mission, vision, and values inform this decision?
In light of the input, make your decision.
Remember, the decisions you make today are the determinant factors for your circumstances tomorrow. Decide wisely.
