“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.” – Abraham Lincoln

This Lincoln quote speaks to the importance of taking initiative. My dad said it another way; he said, “You cannot hit if you do not swing”! However, this is the opposite of what the majority of people do in life. My experience is that most people get more of what they don’t want rather than what they do want. Why? The answer is simple, they never really decide what it is that they do want.

There are three keys to getting what you want. They are simple, yet profound.

· First, know what it is you want. You have to know what it is you want before you can get what it is you want.
· Second, determine how to get it. Only after you know what you want can you begin to figure out how to get it.
· Third, pay the price to get it. You can have anything you want, if you are willing to pay the price to get it. I once heard a man say, “I used to see someone who had achieved great things and ask, ‘How did they do that?’ After a few successes of my own, I no longer ask that question. Rather, I now look at someone who has achieved great things and say, ‘I wonder what kind of price they had to pay to get to where they are?’”

Knowing what you want, determining how to get it, and being willing to pay the price for it, are the keys to unlocking the mystery of how to get whatever it is you want.
