In John 17:30 the last recorded words of Jesus before he died on the cross were the words “it is finished!”
But what is finished? On this day we celebrate what is most likely the greatest day in all history. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The special thing about Easter is that before Jesus died, the world was one way. And on the day that He rose from the dead, the world was forever changed!
Jesus finished what needed to be finished so that 3 days later, on this day that we celebrate, a new beginning could happen! Just like in life, to start to do something new means we must stop doing something old.
Jesus finished what needed to be finished in the world so that what needed to start in us could start!
But, what did Jesus finish?
First of all: and perhaps most importantly, the word that Jesus used in the Greek was the word tetelestai. This is an accounting term that means “paid in full.” Jesus was declaring that the debt of sin was paid in full forever! Jesus last words signify the fact that, as long as we choose to, we don’t have to face the ultimate price of our sin. Jesus died so that once and for all the greatest debt that all of us will ever owe is paid.
Jesus also fulfilled all the prophecies that were spoken of him in Old Testament, except for one, the resurrection that we celebrate today. There are over 300 Old Testament prophecies concerning the Anointed One and Jesus fulfilled them all. What does this mean? God may have given you many promises, and they might not have come to pass. What Jesus “finishing it” means is that every promise that God has for you will come to pass!
Finally, in Ephesians 2, the Bible says that God raised us from the dead! He gave us life by raising Jesus from the dead! Because God loves us, he chose us to live in spite of ourselves. So that everyday we can bring this same kind of life into many dead places!
In Ephesians 2:10, the Bible says that YOU are God’s masterpiece! He has created you new in Christ so that you can do the great things that he planned for you long ago!
Jesus died on the cross so that the old “us” could die. He finished what need to be finished so that we could be the kind of people that do GREAT things that he planned for us.
On this day, what needs to end in your life so that you can have a new beginning? God wants to do a new thing in us, but we have to let him finish the old thing that is dead.
The greatest way to have a new beginning with God is to believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord.
If you would like a new beginning with God today, pray these words and believe in your heart. I am believing with you that God will help you to finish what needs to finish in your life so that He can start a new and better thing!
Dear Jesus, come into my heart. Forgive me of my sin. Cleanse me of all unrighteousness. I choose to serve you. I choose to put you first. Be Lord over every area of my life. Finish what needs to be finished so that you can start a new thing. Thank you for dying on a cross for me.
It’s that easy! Decide what needs to end in your life so that God can start something new!
