“Fasting is a determinant discipline that empowers you to say no to the impulse of immediate gratification.” –Leadershipology.com
We, at Elevate Life Church, have begun a fast we are calling, “21 Days of Prayer and Fasting.” Prayer and fasting are closely related and are great ways to GROW in our relationship with God. The Bible says, as we draw near to God, He draws near to us.
Make prayer a daily part of your life. Mark 1:35 says, “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” This verse shows us that Jesus arose at a certain time, went to a certain place, and had a certain plan. In making prayer a daily part of your life, have a:
- Certain time … make an appointment with God.
- Certain place … select a place where you will not be distracted.
- Certain plan … go into this time with a prayer plan.
Make fasting part of your life. Daniel 9:34 says, “And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: And I prayed unto the Lord God, and made my confession…” Fasting anything is to subject a desire for something less, to something you want more. It is a determinant discipline because if you can say no to food hunger you can say no to other impulsive cravings that potentially have explosive consequences. When you say no to anything that immediately gratifies, you discipline yourself to say yes to a future that satisfies tomorrow. Fasting is not a means of seeking God’s blessings as much as it is a means of seeking God. It is not a test for the super spiritual, a means of twisting God’s arm, or a formula for getting through to God. Fasting is focusing on the Lord … looking to him for comfort, power, strength, guidance, forgiveness and hope. If you would like to get more information on fasting, please click here.
