On your leadership journey, be strategic and intentional about making and taking time to get to know your followers. Here are two things you can do to get started.

1. Ask them to share their story with you.

Find out what makes them tick, their strengths and weaknesses, their likes and dislikes, their temperaments.

2. Spend some time with them outside the environment where you typically see them.

If you work together, then play sports together. If you know each other from church, meet with them at their workplace. You can even use this principle with your family. For example, be intentional about spending time with your children outside your everyday environment and you’ll learn a lot about them. It will develop your relationship in ways it hasn’t before, and it will help you grow.

Don’t make the mistake of trying to lead others without developing relationships with them. Be a great leader … one who knows that great relationships are worth great effort!
