It was such an honor and privilege this past weekend to have a very special guest, Les Brown, share his thoughts on winning with us.

Les is a motivational speaker, former U.S. politician, popular author, radio DJ, and former host of The Les Brown Show. I have shared the stage with him many times in the world’s largest business seminars over the past 16 years. He was born with his twin brother Wesley on February 17, 1945 in a low-income section of Miami, Florida in an abandoned building. He was subsequently given up for adoption and adopted by Mamie Brown, a then 38-year-old single woman who worked as a cafeteria attendant and domestic assistant. He was declared “educably mentally retarded” while in grade school. Despite the obvious self-esteem issues this created, with the encouragement of his mother and assistance by a helpful teacher in high school, he learned how to reach his full potential.

During our time together, he touched on how he rose from a fast-talking morning DJ to a broadcast manager; from voracious reader to author; from community activist to community leader; from political commentator to three-term state legislator; from an emcee to a premier keynote speaker for Fortune 100 companies and business seminars.

Below are three great points (among many he shared) that speak to what it takes to win. I encourage you to view his full message by clicking here … you will be entertained, challenged, and inspired to win!

  1. All Achievement Begins in Your Mind: You cannot expect to achieve new goals or move beyond your present circumstances unless you change!
  1. You’ve Got to be Hungry: In efforts to achieve at the highest level, Les says, you have to be untiring, relentlessly huunnngry! In challenging us to win, Les told his own story of achievement over the odds, telling us his famous DJ story, recounting how he broke into broadcasting.
  1. O.Q.P.: Only Quality People … Only hang out with quality people. There are some people in your life you have to let go … let go or be dragged!

A final thought …

God made you to win! Winning is the ability to overcome any obstacle that stands between you and your goal to produce the outcome that you want.

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.” – I Corinthians 9:24 (NKJV)

Good is not good enough when you’re destined to win.  We must run our “race” in such a way that we obtain the win.  So, get up, look up, and win!
