“The questions you ask will determine the answers you get.” – Leadershipology.com

The better the questions you ask, the better the answers you get. Effectiveness questions are powerful, because they direct and reveal answers. Effective leaders ask effectiveness questions of themselves to shape a clear sense of purpose, be able to articulate their core values, and create and set clear expectations.

Here are some examples:

  • To identify your sense of purpose: Ask, “Why do I lead others? What are my goals as a leader? What do I want to help others accomplish?”
  • Articulate your core values: What is so important to you that it influences every decision? It might be, for example, honesty, integrity, trust, diligence? List three or four that everyone you work with should know.
  • Create clear expectations:What should team members expect from you, and what do you expect from them? How can they expect the team to work as a whole, and what are their roles within it? This portion reflects “how we want to lead and work together” and involves authority, accountability, and support.

The way you think and ask questions about leadership is a reflection of your greatness – what I refer to as your 1%. It’s one of the ways you elevate your uniqueness. Choose to think and ask questions like an effective leader…and you’ll elevate your character and your goals. Choose to act like a leader…and you’ll elevate your achievements.
